I took this photo of a main street leading into the centre of Kabul in Afghanistan in late 1976. I spent about a month there at a time when Afghanistan was at peace. You can see the Hindu Kush mountain range looming behind the city, covered in snow.
Reflecting, it was a fascinating time to visit Kabul which was moving forward towards what was thought to be a bright future with university life flourishing and women at work. Almost two years later, everything changed with the Russian invasion.
Read my other small blog detailing more about my visit in my 20th August, 2021 story – Kabul markets, Afghanistan – 1976.
